Calling all artists

I almost never forward things, but these two postings were a little hard to pass up:

1. Race across the country hawking your stuff for $20,000

"CASTING: ART RACE

Gallery HD and Illuminations Media are looking for two Fearless, Charismatic, Passionate & Informed ARTISTS to take the definitive chutzpah road trip.

Two Artist/Art Racers must cross the US in 40 days, surviving only on
Art. Armed with art materials, cameras and a $1 dollar budget, the
Artist/Art Racers must “trade” Art for food, shelter and other art
-works.

Starting on opposite coasts (one in NYC and one in LA), the Art
Racers’ odyssey culminates in a home-city exhibition of all the works
they have created and collected along the way. The winner is the
Artist/Art Racer who sells/trades the most artwork. Or at least the one
who survives.

Looking for great communicators who interact well with all sorts of
people and can make smart commentary as life happens. Intelligent, sassy
and witty are good too. All participants must live in the New York or
Los Angeles areas, be at least 21 years old and a US citizen or legal
resident alien.

If this is you, please submit the following:
- recent photo (no older than 6 months)
- bio or resume
- sample of your art (photo reproduction okay)
- short essay explaining why you are an Art Racer
- be sure to include your full name, home city and phone number

Please send all ASAP to: subs@barbarabarnacasting.com

**Bio/Resume & Essay should be in body of email**

photo attachments okay

ART RACE shoots May 26 – July 11 for appx 40 days on the road + up to
5 add’l shoot days & voice over.

Each Art Racer will receive $20,000 US for participating.

Production Company is Illuminations Media
UK www.illuminationsmedia.co.uk"

2. Giant legal spot

Who: You
What: Legal graffiti
Size: 30 x 32 yards
Where: 220 W. 19th Street, New York
When: Now through May 12, 2008
Sponsored by: Diesel

"Indulge your artistic and competitive sides with a shot at public exposure—and not the limo-leaving kind—when you apply to exhibit your original artwork on the fifth annual Diesel Wall, arriving in the States for the first time. Traditional painting and photography routes are kosher, but so are media like video and performance art. So stop drawing on your jeans and start thinking big. Applications and information are available at http://www.diesel.com/cult/wall/."

You're welcome :)

We can all buy slammin' art at sick prices from some of our favorite artists starting with those included in this month's Stencil History X book release show without hopping on a $600 dollar flight to Vienna.
So go! shop! quickly - before someone else snatches up these treasures from the likes of C215, Artiste-Ouvrier (one of my favorites), EZP and many more!

Hektor Spray-paint output device

This contraption is the opening piece for the Design and the Elastic Mind show that's up at the MoMA in NYC right now!

Hektor Spray-paint output device

what the blurb says (thanks MoMA!):

Jürg Lehni (Swiss born 1978) and Uli Franke (German born 1978)

Hektor Spray-Paint Output device

Stepper motor, toothed belts, aluminum casing, spray can, suitcase, custom-made electronics, and Scriptographer software.

“In a publishing world dominated by paper and ink, Hektor allows for printing with spray paint. The contraption commands a suspended spray-paint can that ”prints” text written using Scriptographer, an Adobe Illustrator scripting plug-in designed by Lehni. “During operation, the mechanism sometimes trembles and wobbles and the paint often drips,” the designers say, creating a tension between low and high technology. “

Maybe we should print our next issue this way??

MORE Catch Up!

Was anyone else lucky enough to catch the HAZE custom Mountain Dew bottle release party on Feb 28? Haze had his giant abstract paintings up on the walls and was more than nice about letting us fans snap his picture and ask for signatures (if you were lucky enough to grab one of the limited edition bottles set up as 'decoration').
It was nuts. Totally packed but enough room for dancing, open bar, and EPMD! what?! yes! EPMD! nuts...

Catch up!

Dearest Overspray Readers,
With all the craziness of trying to get all the stuff together for the upcoming issue we've neglected to post some of the great events that have transpired over the last few weeks in our beloved NYC...

KIMYON and ELLIS G. - MIXTURE

Kimyon and Ellis G. put on a great first-time-collaborating show at Paloma restaurant on Greenpoint Ave. last thursday (fantastic dirty martinis.... mmmm....)! The crowds definitely showed up in support, the music was rockin', and the scene was stellar. The art was hung perfectly: with one piece of Ellis' followed by one of Kimyon, then Ellis, then Kimyon, etc. - their styles complementing each other's lines and colors.

MIXTURE - Ellis G. + Kimyon

MIXTURE - Ellis G. + Kimyon

The highlight of the evening was when Ellis pulled out the chalk right in front of the spot where a couple tall bike riders had locked up their rides. Think it was his first tall bike tracing?!

Notes from Wien - Updates from Inoperable Gallery

"The French are back in Vienna with a whole new project! This time with the new president of the C215 Collective, Samantha, she will be presenting her new book Stencil History X. To accompany the release of the book, Samantha and Christian have brought over a hell of alot of stencils and artworks from artists in the book.

Some of the artists who will be shown in the exhibition are the top Stencil artists in the world which include: DNM (AT), Logan Hicks (US), Broken Crow (US), Sten (IT), Orticanoodles (IT), Btoy (SP), Alto*Contraste (BR), Doctor H (BEL), Kostar (BEL), C215 (FR), Janaundjs - Isbach (FR), Artiste-Ouvrier (FR), Mosko et Associés (FR), EZP (FR), Espylon Point (FR), Spliff Gachette (FR), Pixal Parazit (FR), Sadhu (FR), YZ Open Your Eyes (FR), Stew (FR), SPizz (FR) and others...

NY Times does a video about Berlin graffiti

In my humble opinion, this dude's cocky attitude about the lenient crackdowns on graf in Berlin is just asking for trouble. You decide for yourself.

Overkill Berlin

Hello world, it's James phoning home from Berlin again. Apparently this is the official European hot spot for street art and graffiti. I say official because the New York Times ran an article about the scene here a few days ago. If you found your way to this website, chances are the article will seem a little square, but they posted a cool video to go along with it, and interviewed Thomas, one of the co-owners of Overkill.

The times I've visited, I've been psyched on the store's whole scenario-- more dope paints and inks than you can fathom, priced reasonably. In a city where hardware stores charge 7-10 Euros for a can of spray paint, Overkill sells Montana and Molotow for 3 and 4. Then again, stores in Berlin don't keep their paint locked up, so chances are a lot of the paint you see up on walls didn't get paid for at all...

The staff is helpful and they also have a serious selection of DVD's and magazines, one of the best I've seen anywhere. They've also got all types of stupid fresh exclusive clothes and sneakers, if you're into that.

They also run a sick blog that gets updated daily with vintage hip hop videos, an online store, and"Overkill Classic" as Michael called it. So yeah, these guys deserve pretty much any shine they have coming their way.

James out.

Save the night!

Overspray is proud to sponsor our boy Ellis G. (Materials issue darling) and Kimyon in their first joint venture together.

Come one come all! Drink! Be Merry! Get the new issue of Overspray!!
