and we have a winner!

The winner of the first annual Overspray pumpkn carving contest, new proud owner of the box of Plutonium G spray paint is CLEAN.

This is his pumpkin. It was a close call between him and two other but in the end the halloween spirit of it and the dedicated carving earned him the crown. Congratulations Clean.

Also, a contestant who for some reason got lost in the fray was Onelegout. His valiant effort is below.

ZOMBIE TEXT-MESSAGE PARTY TONIGHT!

If you're looking for something to do tonight, head to Brooklyn and participate in TXTual Healing's showing of Night of the Living Dead. What better way to spend Halloween than writing new dialog for a movie that has scared us all shitless for decades?

The dialogue will be determined by Text Messages sent live from the audience-- here's a clip from the recent LA screening:

It's all going down on the corner of Smith st. and Pacific St. in Brooklyn, at 7pm. Take F/G train to the Bergen stop.

CLOSING TIME

The Overspray Magazine CARVE OR STARVE jack-o-lantern contest is coming to a close today-- later on we'll post the results up here, and the winner will get a big fat box full of spray paint in their mail.

WHILE L.A. IS ON FIRE...

Anika Lister forwarded this little nugget our way this morning:

And our fearless leader Io is leaving for California in a few hours. Hopefully the climate-fuck wildfires don't swallow her alive.

GET WASTED AND CELEBRATE

It's not street art. But it doesn't take a genius to see the relevance.

NEW YORK IN THE 70's
by Allan Tannenbaum

'It was a multisexual, hedonistic, exuberant time. Politically things had gone haywire - there was a lot of mass disillusionment after Vietnam and Watergate. A lot of people decided to check their minds at the door and have a good time and figured that was the best way to express themselves in a democracy. Just get wasted and celebrate" -Michael Musto, SoHo News.

Press launch: 1st November 07
Please RSVP to Vickie@Jaguarshoes.com
2nd - 4th November 07
The Dray Walk Gallery, Truman Brewery
London, E1

So if you're in London and you feel like your life has been lacking in New York grit or face-melting self-indulgence, check the show out. These party animals grew up and gave birth to our generation. Scary, I know.

PUMPKIN TIME!

Who's been slicing pumpkins up for our little jack-o-lantern contest? This morning we got another submission, and hopefully they'll keep coming.

Let's not forget-- carving the gnarliest pumpkin will net you an arsenal of eco-friendly spraycans from Plutonium-G. So if you want to step up, email a few pictures and a link to your web site (if you've got one) to overspraymag@gmail.com. Spooky!

Mike Crowley

And just to show our jack-o-solidarity, here's a pumpkin carved by yours truly:

CARVE OR STARVE

Alright all you witches and warlocks, dracula and jedi wannabes. It's that time of year, when we shun the saints and celebrate the ghouls. All Hallows Eve aka HALLOWEEN! You thought it had nothing to do with street art, but you were wrong.

1. Carved pumpkins = art.
2. Carved pumpkins placed on the street/on porches/outside anywhere =
art on the street
3. Pumpkins being a fruit that will decay with weather and age =
inherently ephemeral art.

Bang boom bang, there you go.

THE CHALLENGE:
Here's where we make it even more fun. We went and scrounged ARMSROCK up after his successful opening in Brooklyn on Friday night and bargained a mythical freestyle session and a cup of coffee (black), for his carving skills. (We at Overspray happen to think Halloween is one of the best holidays of the year. Period.) He has set the bar quite high folks, and now we want to see what you can do with a kitchen knife and a pumpkin.

PRIZE:
We are offering a grip of spray paint from the new manufacturer on the block, Plutonium G (70% pigment, you can spray it upside down, etc.) (www.plutoniumg.com). Get nasty on a pumpkin and send us a photo, get as creative as you can and we'll post all the submissions on our blog/site (www.overspray.blogspot.com), with a link to your work elsewhere. The winner will be announced on Halloween and the box of paint will be delivered to your door shortly thereafter.

Get to choppin'.

CATCHING UP WITH ASBESTOS

We hadn't heard much from Asbestos since he worked with Overspray on Hit the Deck, so when he managed to put a few minutes aside to answer some questions, I was psyched.

Every single one of Asbestos' pieces has a whole lot of character. Lately, most of his energies have been going into one of a kind portraits on plywood or tile, which he then affixes to public walls. Because every piece is so obviously hand-crafted and carefully placed, the pieces seem intensely personal. I asked him what he was hoping to achieve and here's what he told me:

"I feel it's all about the personal touch. I get such a kick out of seeing graffiti that has a that personal touch, whether it's a tag, some random toilet graffiti or a beautifully painted piece. I still love the artists that put up masses of stuff and poster or paint their way all over the city, but I'm trying to do something different. I want each painting or dolls head that I put up to be hand crafted and unique, so that it's a moment of discovery when you find it out in the wild. Each of my portraits or hands pieces are painted with that idea. I want to put something out on the street that shouldn't be there, that looks a bit out of place, but also adds to its new environment."

As anyone could guess, hand-made one-of-a-kind paintings are a pretty hot commodity. And since they're not painted directly onto walls, Asbestos' work is basically a thief's wet dream. "The last time I put work up in London 3 of the 5 paintings were gone within the week", he said. "All I can do is make it more difficult to take them down."

And while he's clearly concerned about preserving his work, nobody can accuse Asbestos of egotism. "Hey, you can't get too high and mighty about what happens to your work when you put it up on the street, it all fair game." he said. "It's up to me to make it as hard to get to so that it last as long as possible. It's a game of cat and mouse and the more I put up, the more I learn how to make them last. I hope that anyone who has taken my work, did so because they really liked it and not because they wanted a few quid to get a new pair of trainers."

So what exactly is Asbestos doing to fight thieves? "Best case scenario is to find a spot high enough so that's it's damn difficult to steal the piece"

"I use a few different commercial glues and cements to fix the pieces, or I'll use some no more nails if I don't have my usual stuff. I have a few secret bits of equipment that I've manufactured to put them up, they're extension poles that fix together so that I can get the piece as high up on a wall as possible."

"But if it does get taken down, I'd prefer it was thrown in a bin rather than have someone try and make a few quid out of it."

After all the cat-and-mouse business, it probably feels good to do some work that won't disappear in a week every now and again. But even in commissioned work, Asbestos finds a way to keep his art ultra-personal and totally ephemeral. In 2005 and 2006, Asbestos trekked up to Sweden with a few other artists to participate in the creation of the Ice Hotel.

In 2005, Asbestos made ice sculptures for the hotel alongside D*Face and Mysterious Al. In 2006, D*Face and Asbestos were asked back to carve an entire room.

"We spent two weeks putting together our gentleman's club with the chairs, bed, fireplace, books, paintings, door and paneling were all carved out of ice. It's an amazing medium to work with because it's really easy to carve and has such a great reaction to light. You can do some crazy stuff with it. The experience of working 10 hour days in -10 degrees sounds like a nightmare, but it was a hell of a lot of fun."

And what's the future going to hold for Asbestos?
"I'm really loving the painting I've been doing over the last few years and I'm getting into a groove at the moment. So there's going to be a lot more of my paintings popping up on a street near you."

And what about years and years into the future?
"I'd love to set up an institute for graffiti that would give artists studio space and funding to carry out their street work. The sooner the better!"

Huge thanks to Asbestos for the pics and words. Check out www.theartofasbestos.com to see more of his work.

If you live in Boston, you should go watch this wall go up over the next week or so. The lineup is stellar-- check the flyer:

Here's the wall that's getting slayed:

Painting should be done by the end of the month, but that's not the fun part. Go check the progress if you're in the area.

WU?

WU? has been making some fresh little stickers and getting up all over Connecticut for a minute now-- check it out.

"One day I just said fuck an acronym I just want to go by Wu because Wu Tang had so much influence on my life. I ended up adding the question mark later because when I was younger I never knew what Wu meant."

WU? just goes to show that you make your own scene. If you don't live in the big city, it's up to you to make things start happening. Use this 'internet' thing, make some trades, throw some other artists up too. If it looks good, people will follow.

Check out WU?'s flickr for more pictures or to get some trades happening.

SMALL MEDIUM AND LARGE OPENING

If you were in London last Friday you might have gotten to see the opening of Small, Medium, and Large at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms. We weren't there, so we owe a huge thanks to our friend Morgan for scoping it out and hooking us up with these pics by Lonestar.

The show's going to be running until November 10, so if you're in London, there's no excuse not to check it out.

ADOPT A PRUNE BABY

French sculptor PRUNE is hitting up London tomorrow with a new show that will probably creep out old people and confuse the general public. Five nannies will be wheeling their "Bebes Domestiques" through the city, toward London's Regent's Park. Along the way they'll be taking applications from prospective adoptive parents.

Later, the lucky parents will be notified before having their new babies delivered and their family portraits taken.

Artist's statement, click to enlarge.

Check out PRUNE's blog, too
If you're going to be in London tomorrow, keep your eye out.

GREETINGS FROM GORE B

Our sticker box just keeps getting more and more stuffed. GoreB sent us a bunch of dope little stickers recently that we're gonna put in the mail with the next round of orders we ship out to subscribers. If this stuff looks cool to you, and you don't subscribe to Overspray, you might want to think about it.

OUTSIDE IN

Our friend Billi Kid is going to be in a really cool show on November 1. The idea is to bring graffiti and street art indoors for a night so it can rest up in a nice hotel room-- hence, bringing the outside in.

Check out some of Billi Kid's work on the Billi Kid flickr or the Billi Kid Brand website. The show is one night only, so mark your calendars now.

HARDDRIVE

HARDDRIVE from California sent us this killer timelapse recently-- watch two days worth of stencil cutting get condensed into a few minutes.

And another from his archive:

If you want to see more, check out Harddrive on myspace. Drop the man a line and let him know what you think.

TIDBITS FROM THE BAY

Here on the east coast heroin is all the rage, but out west there are armies of tweakers with no sense of irony or shame.
